A Celebration of Tree Planting

Today, the Mayor of Bridlington attended a tree planting ceremony at our school, where we planted five fruit trees towards our commitment to increasing nature within our school.

This is part of our Young Tree Champions involvement – we chose to plant fruit trees (apples, pears and plums) to provide fruit for the school, in addition to the other benefits (wildlife habitats, oxygen, reducing carbon dioxide, good for mental health) that trees can bring.

We were really pleased to also be joined by Burlington Infants, Burlington Pre-School, 9th Priory Brownies and Guides and also New Pasture Lane Primary – each group planted a fruit tree to create a long-lasting community project, showing how schools and organisations can collaborate together to improve their local environment.

After the planting, we toured the nature areas of our school, beginning with our Garden area. We all had ‘Find It’ quizzes to see how many of the pictures we could find around the garden.

This included the glasshouse made from recycled bottles, which the Mayor particularly liked, and also the beds and borders with the many signs of new life and flowers beginning to emerge. .

We then walked to the Pond to see if we could find any frogs and listen to the friendly robin. We were fascinated by looking at the water to see if we could find any signs of life. There were many small creatures swimming around, but we didn’t see any frogs today (although the Mayor was convinced he had and had us looking for ages to find one).

After the Pond visit, we walked slightly further to visit the Meadow, which has greened up and is growing fast. We could now cut the path as the bulbs lining this are bif enough to see. Some were even starting to flower.

The Infant school were also out in their nature area as we arrived. The Mayor had to go over and say hello which made the children very excited.

We all had a great time, but as all things do, it had to come to an end as we all needed to get ready to go home. We really enjoyed showing everybody around our school nature areas and we have invited everybody to come back again sometime, and also thanked them for helping us to plant our orchard.

So now our orchard is planted, we can now watch them grow. It is amazing to think that the youngest pupils who attended from the Pre-School will see their tree grow into a large tree and hopefully they will enjoy the fruit it produces.
